Fares and Tickets

Price levels, ticket range and prices

Which ticket and price level do I need to reach my destination? How much will it cost? Find the answers to these questions and other useful information about our ticket range and services.

Price zones within the VRR

The VRR offers four different price levels. Here is a brief overview.

  1. Kurzstrecke (short trip)
In most cities, the short trip ticket allows you to travel three or four stops. Please refer to the list at each stop to see which destinations you can reach with a short trip ticket.
  2. Price level A
Price level A is valid for trips within one fare zone. In those cities which span two fare zones (Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen and Wuppertal), price level A is valid for travel in the entire city. Price level A is also valid for trips between two adjacent tariff cells (“Waben”) in neighbouring cities. Price level A is divided in levels A1 and A2:
A1 valid in smaller cities and rural areas
A2 valid in 17 large cities with higher quality public transport services, such as more connections per hour, faster Stadtbahn connections, NE lines etc.
  3. Price level B
Price level B tickets allow you to travel to your neighbouring cities – and sometimes even further.
  4. Price level C
Price level C is intended for medium range trips. It is valid in two adjacent central tariff zones of your choosing as well as all tariff zones adjacent to them – sometimes even further. The two central tariff zones must be adjacent to one another and a bus, tram or train connection must exist between them.
  5. Price level D
Tickets in price level D are valid throughout the entire VRR area.

The VRR ticket range

The VRR offers you various ticket options - depending on your age, whether you are a frequent or an occasional traveller, a late riser, a pupil or a trainee or whether you just need a ticket for an excursion.
You can find detailed information on our ticket range in the brochure Welcome New Customers.

Where to purchase tickets

Tickets are available at any Customer Service Centre ("KundenCenter") and ticket counter of participating public transport companies, as well as at private sales outlets and ticket machines. Single tickets, day tickets and ZusatzTickets (supplementary tickets) can also be obtained from our drivers.
Please remember to stamp your ticket before starting your journey. Stamping machines are located in all buses, trains and trams, on the platforms and the ramps leading up to the platforms. Tickets purchased from drivers are already stamped.

Please refer to the German section of the website for the addresses of our Customer Centres:
