Important information on construction work in the 2026 timetable year

Extensive construction work is planned on various sections of track in the VRR area during the 2026 timetable year (December 14, 2025, to December 12, 2026). These measures will lead to considerable restrictions in train services in some cases. The exact sections affected by cancellations and the lines concerned will be announced in good time on zuginfo.nrw.

The construction site preview in detail (as of 09.12.2025):

Oberhausen – Emmerich (varying roadworks)

Complete closures

  • 2–4 January 2026 (weekend)
  • 20 February – 22 February 2026 (weekend)
  • 20 March – 22 March 2026 (weekend)
  • 20 April – 18 May 2026 (four weeks)
  • 9 November – 16 November 2026 (one week)

During the periods listed above, all trains on lines RE 5 (RRX), RE 19 and RE 49 between Oberhausen Central Station and Wesel/Bocholt/Emmerich/Arnhem Centraal will be cancelled. A replacement bus service (SEV) will be provided accordingly.

During periods not mentioned above, the line between Friedrichsfeld (Niederrhein) and Wesel will be closed in one direction. Trains on lines RE 5 (RRX) and RE 49 travelling from Duisburg/Essen will terminate at Friedrichsfeld “Am Industriepark”. Trains on the RE 19 service will run according to the timetable during periods not mentioned above, but will not stop at Friedrichsfeld, continuing on to Wesel/Bocholt/Emmerich/Arnhem Centraal.

Venlo – Mönchengladbach (varying construction phases)

  • 20 April – 18 May 2026 (four weeks)

Due to unavoidable closures on the Oberhausen–Emmerich line, numerous international freight and long-distance trains will also have to be diverted via the Mönchengladbach–Viersen–Venlo (NL) route.
As this route is largely single-track and therefore lacks sufficient capacity to accommodate the diverted trains, there will also be occasional partial cancellations and missed stops on this route for trains on lines RE 8 and RE 13.

RE 13 service: During the periods mentioned above, the RE 13 service will be suspended from Monday to Friday between Venlo and Mönchengladbach Central Station. At weekends, trains on the RE 13 service will run between 9.00 and 20.00 between Mönchengladbach Central Station and Venlo, although there will be no stops at Boisheim and Breyell.

A replacement bus service has been organised between Venlo and Mönchengladbach Central Station, stopping at all usual stops. In addition, an express bus runs between Venlo and Mönchengladbach Central Station without any stops.

RE 8 line: Trains are cancelled between Mönchengladbach Central Station and Rommerskirchen. The additional RE 8 services during rush hour between Kaldenkirchen and Cologne are completely cancelled during these periods. A rail replacement bus service (SEV) has been put in place.
