S6 line between Ratingen and Essen remains closed until 2026

Since a landslide in January 2024, the S6 S-Bahn line between Essen and Ratingen-Hösel has been closed - and is expected to remain so until the first half of 2026.

Deutsche Bahn is waiting for the planning approval procedure and authorisation from the Federal Railway Authority before construction work can begin. Once the construction companies have been commissioned, the construction period is expected to last around six months. Until then, replacement services will continue as follows:

Until 15 November 2024:

  • Monday to Friday, 4.30 am to 8 pm: S 6 trains will run between Cologne and Ratingen Ost and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • Rail replacement service (SEV): Buses will run between Ratingen Ost and Kettwig.

Change from 16 November 2024:

  • Monday to Friday, 4:30 am to 8 pm and Saturday, 10:20 am to approx. 8 pm: S 6 trains will run between Cologne and Ratingen Ost and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses will run between Ratingen Ost and Kettwig.


Until 15 November 2024:

  • Monday to Friday, 8 pm to 4:30 am; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays all day:
  • The S 6 runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses run between Unterrath Kirche (S 1/S 11 connection) // Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte (S 6 connection) and Kettwig.

Change from 16 November 2024:

  • Monday to Friday, 8 pm to 4:30 am; Saturday, until 10:20 am and from 8 pm; Sunday, all day: The S 6 runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses run between Düsseldorf-Unterrath (S 1/S 11 connection) / Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte (S 6 connection) and Kettwig.
