Free travel for children on World Children's Day 2025 On the road for free on 20 September
On 20 September 2025, all children under the age of 15 can travel free of charge on all buses and trains in the VRR network area and throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. A ticket is not required. VRR is turning World Children's Day into an opportunity to experience the use of public transport together and to teach children about safety in transport.
Safely on the move in everyday life
Ride the bus or train with your children and show them how stops, timetables and transfers work. In this way, children learn to move around the city independently, get on and off safely and plan their route. Especially in urban areas, it is important that children learn about orientation and safety in traffic at an early age.
Information for children under the age of six
Children under the age of six may only ride if accompanied by an adult or another child who is at least six years old. Even outside of World Children's Day, children under the age of six travel free of charge on VRR.
Support for parents and teachers
VRR also provides educational transport material to support parents and teachers. It clearly shows children how to get on and off the bus safely, recognise stops and find their way around public transport. In this way, the use of buses and trains can be practised in a targeted manner and anchored in everyday life.
