Construction work between Düsseldorf and Cologne: RE 1 (RRX), RE 5 (RRX), S 6, S 11 and S 68 affected

Extensive engineering works are due to take place on the line between Düsseldorf and Cologne. The entire line will be affected from 21 August to 4 September 2026. Long-distance, regional and S-Bahn trains will be diverted or replaced by rail replacement bus services. Subsequently, from 4 September to 4 December 2026, the works will focus on the S-Bahn line.

During this period, DB InfraGO is carrying out a wide range of works on tracks, points and bridges, as well as on the RRX expansion project. For passengers, this means various timetable changes and alternative transport arrangements, depending on the construction phase. During the first phase, running until 4 September, services affected include the RE 1 (RRX), RE 5 (RRX), S 6, S 11 and S 68.

21 August to 4 September: Line completely closed

From Friday 21 August (9.00 pm) to Friday 4 September 2026 (9.00 pm), the line between Cologne-Mülheim and Düsseldorf Central Station will be completely closed to train services. The following changes will apply:

RE 1 (RRX): Trains will be diverted via Neuss Central Station. Trains will not stop at Düsseldorf-Benrath, Leverkusen Mitte, Cologne-Mülheim, Cologne Messe/Deutz and Cologne Central Station. Instead, trains will stop at Neuss Central Station and Dormagen. Replacement buses will operate between Düsseldorf Central Station, Düsseldorf-Benrath, Leverkusen Mitte and Cologne-Mülheim.
RE 4 (RRX): The additional services between Aachen and Düsseldorf Central Station are cancelled.
RE 5 (RRX): Trains are cancelled between Düsseldorf and Cologne-Mülheim. Replacement buses are operating on this section.
S 6: Trains are cancelled between Düsseldorf Central Station and Cologne-Mülheim. Replacement buses are running between Düsseldorf and Langenfeld, and between Langenfeld and Cologne-Mülheim. Additional express buses are running during peak hours.
S 11: Trains are cancelled between Neuss Central Station and Cologne-Worringen. Replacement buses are operating.
S 68: Trains are suspended between Düsseldorf Central Station and Langenfeld. The SEV service on the S 6 can be used as an alternative.

Alternatively, passengers can use the RE 6 (RRX) and RE 7 services between Düsseldorf or Neuss Central Station and Cologne Central Station, amongst others.

4 September to 4 December: S-Bahn line closed

From Friday 4 September (9.00 pm) to Friday 4 December 2026 (9.00 pm), the S-Bahn line between Cologne-Mülheim and Düsseldorf Central Station will remain closed. There will also be timetable changes and replacement services during this construction phase.

RE 1 (RRX): On services towards Aachen, the stop at Düsseldorf-Benrath is omitted. Alternatively, the RE 5 can be used.
RE 5 (RRX): On services towards Koblenz, the stop at Cologne-Mülheim will be omitted. Alternatively, passengers can use the RE 1. From 9 to 30 October, the stop at Düsseldorf-Benrath will also be omitted in both directions. During this period, a replacement bus service will operate between Düsseldorf Central Station, Düsseldorf-Benrath and Leverkusen Mitte.
S 6: Trains are cancelled between Düsseldorf Central Station and Cologne-Mülheim. Replacement buses will run between Düsseldorf Central Station and Langenfeld, and between Langenfeld and Cologne-Mülheim. During peak hours, additional express buses will run between Langenfeld and Cologne-Mülheim.
S 68: Trains are cancelled between Düsseldorf Central Station and Langenfeld. The S 6 replacement bus service can be used as an alternative.
