ver.di warning strikes in public transport

Until Monday (23rd of march) the trade union ver.di is once again calling for nationwide warning strikes in local public transport. There will be considerable restrictions on bus, underground and tram services. S-Bahn and regional trains are not affected by the strike action.

Backgrounds

What is the strike about?

The background to the warning strikes is the ongoing wage negotiations for the public sector. The talks between the trade union ver.di and the municipal employers have so far failed to reach an agreement. With the warning strikes, ver.di wants to emphasise the demands of the employees.

Specifically, the union is demanding better working conditions for around 100,000 employees in local public transport. ver.di has been negotiating with the municipal employers' associations (KAV) in all 16 federal states since November. Among other things, the focus is on shorter working weeks and shifts, longer rest periods and higher bonuses for night and weekend work.

Position of employers

The municipal employers point to the tight financial situation of many cities and transport companies. The improvements demanded are difficult to realise in the proposed form. A viable offer has not yet been made. The warning strikes reflect the current deadlock in negotiations.

Why bus and tram services?

Bus and tram services are predominantly operated by municipal transport companies and are therefore directly affected by the current collective bargaining dispute in the public sector. S-Bahn and regional trains, such as S 2 or RE 1, usually belong to other fare structures and are therefore not part of the strike action.
